People are looking for a place where they can belong; where they are accepted for who they are, regardless of the color of their skin, the clothes they wear, the amount of education they have, or how much they make. They want to be where they can experience the love of God in their lives and be a channel of His love to others; where they can grow in His grace; and where they can serve Christ with the gifts He has given them. That’s what we’re about at Providence, and we would like for you to be a part of it.
There is really nothing special about us. We’re just a group of people who have found new life in Jesus Christ and want to share it with you. We don’t have a big gymnasium, a rock band, or a fancy building. But what we do have is perhaps more important than all that, and much more important.
First of all, Providence is firmly rooted in historic Christianity, committed to standing in the faith of our fathers. We eagerly embrace the ancient Creeds and Confessions of the Church.
Second, we are passionately committed to sharing the love of Jesus Christ with others, beginning in our own neighborhood, but in distant lands as well.
Third, we are committed to worshipping God, not according to the latest trends or fashions, but in a manner consistent with Biblical teaching.
Fourth, we are committed to developing and maintaining a sense of ‘community’ – where people don’t get lost in programs.
Our history
The Providence Reformed Presbyterian Church was formed when the Westminster and St. Paul ARP churches merged. Westminster, formerly known simply as the Memphis ARP church, was formed in 1935 with 43 charter members. They were located in midtown Memphis, settling into a new sanctuary in 1939. In the late 1960s a daughter church was planted in the Raleigh-Bartlett area, assuming the name of St. Paul Presbyterian. The core group began meeting in 1968, and was officially organized as a congregation in December of 1973. At that time five acres were purchased and a temporary building was erected at the current location, the first service conducted on May 19, 1974.
The two congregations served independently for over twenty years until 1997 when, through a variety of circumstances, the Lord led them to reunite as one fellowship. The merger took place on June 1, 1997. Because of the manner in which the Lord worked to bring them together, it was felt that it was only appropriate to incorporate Providence into the name of the church.
